Cereus forbessi monstrose 'Ming Thing' (Ming Thing Cactus)
Botanical Name: Cereus forbesii f. monstrosa ‘Ming Thing’
Common Names: Ming Thing Cactus, Monstrose Cereus
Cereus forbesii f. monstrosa ‘Ming Thing’ is a highly sculptural cactus admired for its unusual, knobby growth and striking architectural form. This distinctive monstrose cultivar develops irregular, twisting segments that form dense clusters of rounded, undulating growth. The blue-green stems create a textured, coral-like appearance, making each plant a one-of-a-kind living sculpture. Because of its compact yet dramatic structure, the Ming Thing Cactus is a popular choice for modern interiors, succulent collections, and decorative container displays.
The plant originates from the parent species Cereus forbesii, which is native to regions of South America. Through natural mutation and cultivation, the ‘Ming Thing’ form developed its unusual monstrose growth pattern, where normal columnar stems instead grow in rounded, contorted clusters. Over time, the plant can develop multiple irregular mounds that slowly expand outward while maintaining its sculptural character.
Although capable of reaching several feet tall in ideal outdoor conditions, this cactus grows relatively slowly and remains more compact when grown in containers. Mature plants may eventually reach approximately 3–6 feet in height and 2–4 feet in width when planted in the ground, while potted specimens typically stay much smaller. Its manageable size and unique shape make it especially appealing as a statement plant on patios, balconies, or indoor plant shelves.
Cereus forbesii f. monstrosa ‘Ming Thing’ thrives in bright conditions and requires minimal care once established. Like many desert cacti, it prefers well-draining soil and infrequent watering, making it well suited to warm climates and drought-conscious gardening.
Care and Cultivation:
• Prefers bright light to full sun for best growth
• Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely between waterings
• Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent soil mix
• Ideal for containers, patios, indoor displays, and cactus collections
• USDA Zones: 9–11; thrives between 60–90°F (16–32°C)
Frost Tolerance and Cold Hardiness:
• Not frost-tolerant
• Protect from temperatures below 32°F (0°C)
• Avoid cold, damp soil conditions during winter
Winter Dormancy and Health:
• Growth slows during cooler months
• Reduce watering significantly in winter
• Maintain bright light year-round to preserve compact growth
Notes:
• Unique monstrose growth creates sculptural, knobby forms
• Each plant develops a distinctive, one-of-a-kind shape
• Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established
• Popular statement cactus for modern interiors and container gardens
