Sempervivum Colorockz® ‘Coconut Crystal’ (Hens and Chicks)
Botanical Name: Sempervivum Colorockz® ‘Coconut Crystal’
Common Names: Hens and Chicks, Houseleek
Sempervivum Colorockz® ‘Coconut Crystal’ is a striking hardy succulent prized for its luminous, icy-toned rosettes and exceptional cold tolerance. Part of the Colorockz® series, this variety brings year-round interest to rock gardens, containers, and alpine plantings, with foliage that intensifies in color through seasonal changes. The Sempervivum genus is native to the mountainous regions of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Available in small nursery pot or terracotta pot with saucer (see Options).
Care and Cultivation:
Full sun to light shade
Well-draining, gritty soil
Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely
Very low maintenance
Frost Tolerance and Cold Hardiness:
Extremely cold-hardy
USDA zones 4–9
Tolerates temperatures to -20°F (-29°C)
Winter Dormancy and Health:
Naturally dormant in winter
Color deepens; growth slows
Keep soil dry in freezing weather
Notes: The plant's color shifts throughout the year in response to light and temperature. In summer, the rosettes transition from lime green to a deep wine red, often developing dark centers that spread outward until only the very tips remain light green or cream. In spring, the plant usually displays a bi-color effect of lime green with red hues. In fall and winter, the plant maintains reddish or pink flushes on light green foliage. For the best color expression, ensure the plant is grown in full sun, as low light can cause it to revert to a plain green.
