Haworthia attenuata (Zebra Plant)
Botanical Name: Haworthia attenuata
Common Names: Zebra Haworthia, Zebra Plant
Haworthia attenuata is a compact, clumping succulent native to South Africa, where it grows in rocky, shaded habitats. It forms tight rosettes of dark green, pointed leaves, covered on the outer surfaces with raised white bands or “zebra” striping. Easy to grow and highly adaptable, this slow-growing species is ideal for small containers, indoor displays, and succulent arrangements. Mature plants typically reach 4–6 inches tall and 4–6 inches wide, forming offsets over time.
Care and Cultivation:
Prefers bright, indirect light to partial sun
Water sparingly; allow soil to dry between waterings
Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent soil mix
Excellent for indoor growing and small containers
Frost Tolerance and Cold Hardiness:
Best suited for USDA Zones 9–11
Not frost-tolerant; protect from temperatures below 32°F (0°C)
Ideal growing temperatures: 60–85°F (16–29°C)
Winter Dormancy and Health:
Growth slows during cooler months
Reduce watering significantly in winter
Maintain bright light to keep growth compact
Notes:
Distinctive white banding gives strong visual contrast
Offsets readily, forming small clumps
Beginner-friendly and low-maintenance
Excellent choice for desks, shelves, and windowsills
